The most cheapest “India wonder tablet” is here launched in India called Akash giving tight competition to other table manufacturer in india.it will cost you only $25(1125Rs).Although its actual cost is $50(2250 Rs) but government is giving 50 per cent subsidy in it. The target is to bring down cost to $10.It has been developed by Datawind the Canada based provider of wireless web access services in collaboration with IIT Rajasthan under the HRD Ministry's National Mission on Education through Information & Communication Technology (NME-ICT).
The idea behind the Akash tablet came first when the son of prem kalra (Director of IIT Rajasthan) presented thesis on tablet. The matter came to Kapil Sibbal(Human resource minister India).Sibbal requested industry houses to come forward but all in vain. After that Sibbal in july 2010 presented a tablet made in china and ordered for its bulk supply but it never turned into reality.IIT Rajasthan came forward and invited tender for developing tablet. The datawind emerged as lowest bidder.
The tablet has number of features like Web Browser, pdf reader, media player, instant messanger,2USB port and internet access in the vicinity of mobile tower. It is Android based with 7 inch touchscreen with no volume button. Aakash runs on a 366MHz Connexant processor and has 256MB RAM. The battery life of the device is maximum 3 hours. It has 2gb flash drive which can be extended to 32gb with Micro SD card.Initially it has been handed down to 500 student. They will give there feedback on the basis of which it will be improved further. The plan is to cover student from class IX to XII in 12th year plan. Presently DataWind received an order for supplying 1 lakh tablet. It has proposed for 10 million tablet a price $37(1750) to the government. The company is coming up with UbiSlate the commercial version of Akash in November.UbiSlate will have a 12- month warranty and internet access across mobile networks for just Rs 99 (2GB).
Although Akash is not launched with competition intent still it give tough competition to Reliance,IBall,HCL, Beetel's Megiqtablet because all the respective tablet has price range nearly 11000 Thousand. On this price it is inaccessible to needy and poor student. If you are thinking to give competition to Apple Ipad then it is not possible.Akash will be profitable in Indian condition because no one had ever imagined for $50 tablet but IIT Rajasthan and Datawind turned it into reality.
